Who We Are
The BGSTA is a volunteer driven nonprofit dedicated to the protection and conservation of sea turtles on Gasparilla Island. Since 2013, we have held an FWC issued Marine Sea Turtle Permit that authorizes us to conduct all FWC required activities necessary to keep the permit in compliance. These include performing daily nesting surveys, conducting hatch success evaluations, reporting and screening depredations, safeguarding sea turtle nests through patrols, and submitting state required reports.
Our Mission
The BGSTA’s mission is to protect and conserve the nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings on Gasparilla Island through comprehensive, science based nesting surveys, vigilant nest monitoring, effective predation reduction, and engaging community education. Our work goes far beyond simply marking nests; it involves dedicated stewardship, data driven conservation efforts, and strict compliance with FWC regulations to ensure the longterm survival of these endangered species and the preservation of their critical habitat.
What We Do
- Conduct FWC required nesting surveys every morning during nesting season, on foot and with the use of an ATV
- Screen nests to reduce predation and improve hatch success, increasing the chance of more hatchlings reaching the water
- Respond to turtle strandings and disorientations, transporting to Mote Marine Laboratory when needed
- Collect and report scientific data for beach renourishment projects and conservation efforts
- Provide community outreach and education
Our Impact
Through our work, the BGSTA has strengthened data accuracy, consistency, and compliance with FWC regulations regarding nesting marine sea turtles and their hatchlings. Using the ATV and other measures, we have improved our program safety and efficiency.
Our Challenges
Unlike many local nonprofits, the BGSTA has no island home base, storage space, or guaranteed beach access. This creates ongoing logistical challenges for equipment, the ATV, and daily operations.
The Funding Reality
Many assume the BGSTA is funded by FWC, the state, or the two counties on Gasparilla Island — but we are not.
- FWC provides no funding
- The State of Florida provides no funding
- Lee County provides no ongoing funding
- Charlotte County provides up to $300 in supplies per year
- Counties only fund nest monitoring activities during beach renourishment projects and their subsequent required post-construction period
What Your Donation Supports
Every dollar donated directly supports program work, including:
- Patrol supplies
- ATV fuel and maintenance
- Bridge tolls and transportation for volunteers on their assigned patrol days
- Data collection tools and reporting requirements
- Educational outreach materials
- Storage and operational logistics required for compliance with the FWC permit
Why Your Support Matters
Without local support, the BGSTA cannot continue the work that records nesting and hatchling data, reduces predation, and increases the chances of hatchlings reaching the water. Our volunteers are committed, our science is strong, and our mission is essential — but we rely entirely on the generosity of our community. Your support helps protect every nest, every hatchling, and the future of sea turtles on Gasparilla Island.
